Death Of Aged Indian.

Captain Kane, Well-Known Nezperce Scout, at Rest.

Captain Kane, the oldest Indian of the Nezperce tribe, and always the staunch friend of the white man and one of the first converts to the Christian religion, is dead at his home near North Lapwai.

Captain Kane was about 100 years of age, and for the past 60 years has been a friend of the whites in all negotiations between the settlers and his people. Because of his position as peacemaker he was given the title of captain, and the name of Kane was acquired over 50 years ago when he headed a boat crew that was sent to Lewiston to secure provisions for the first Indian agent of the Nezperce reservation, the agent's name being Kane.

At the time of the Nezperce war Captain Kane was loyal to his white friends and acted as guard at the agency during the war times. He was often on watch for 24 hours at a time and rendered valuable service to the whites by informing them of intended moved by the hostile Nezperces.
