Transient Killed In Rail Accident

Charles Joseph Miller, 32, transient, met death Wednesday shortly before midnight when he apparently fell between cars on the downriver freight train leaving here at 11:30. The body was not discovered until the Lewiston-Spokane passenger train arrived at 2:30 yesterday morning.

Fireman P. G. Henderson of the passenger run saw the body lying between the tracks when the train was about 800 feet east of the passenger depot. He told Engineer M. Ranschki and before the train could be brought to a stop the locomotive and mail car, combination car, and coach sleeper passed over the spot where the body rested.

Dead Several Hours

The passenger train crew made an examination of the body and surroundings. Apparently the man fell from the freight train. The body was cool when discovered. Coroner L. B. Wann and city and county officers were notified and the body was taken to the Brower-Wann mortuary.

Investigators said the body had been dragged about 100 feet and was badly mutilated. R. W. Vermears was conductor on the passenger train.

Identification was possible by papers found on the victim. He registered with the selective service board at Harrisburg, Penn., and was placed in 4-F classification. Ration books he carried gave his address as Sedan, Neb., while his social security card was dated at Wahol, Neb.

Coroner Wann notified the Harrisburg board of the accident with the expectation that relatives could be contacted. No inquest will be held.
