Grace E. Reed, Pioneer Of 1889, Taken By Death

Mrs. Grace Ellen Reed, 69, resident of the Lewiston district for the last 60 years, passed away at 10 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph's hospital, where she had been a patient since June 22.

In poor health for several years, Mrs. Reed's condition had been deteriorating since January. Death was attributed to terminal uremia.

Born at Riverton, Neb., Nov. 26, 1879, she came to this area in the fall of 1888 with her parents, August and Eliza Mitchell Pierstorff. The family spent the winter at Asotin where Mr. Pierstorff worked in a flour mill operated by his brother.

In 1889 the family moved to Lewiston, building the fifth house on Normal hill at 513 3rd Ave. Mrs. Reed received her education in the Lewiston schools.

Married in 1902

She was married to Thomas B. Reed June 26, 1902, and they moved to Pierce where they operated a general merchandising business until 1917. For the next 17 years Mr. Reed was engaged in highway construction and operated a livestock farm. He was state senator from Clearwater county for six terms.

In 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Reed moved to Lewiston, residing at 800 6th Ave. Mr. Reed died in 1938.

Entering at 16 under special dispensation, Mrs. Reed had been a member of Alpha Rebekah lodge, Lewiston, for 53 years. She was a member of the Past Noble Grands club and of the Lady Militants of the Rebekah order. She was a member of Laurel chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Eastern Star auxiliary.

She had been a member of the Lewiston First Methodist church since 1891 and in recent years had taken an active part in church and Sunday school work.

Several Survivors

Mrs. Reed is survived by one daughter, Mrs. R. L. Holbrook; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Arnold, College Place, Wash., and Mrs. Henry A. Mochel, Craigmont, and one brother, John E. Pierstorff, Lewiston Orchards. Surviving also are two grandchildren, Ellen Louise Holbrook, Lewiston, and Robert Reed Holbrook, Fort Benning, Ga.

Funeral services for Mrs. Reed will be conducted from the Brower-Wann chapel at 1:30 Monday afternoon, with the Rev. John B. Coan as officiant. Burial will be in the family plot at Normal Hill cemetery.
