Riley Rice, Pioneer On Prairie, Passes

Settled in Cottonwood Area in 1883 - Victim of Paralysis - Range Rider in Wyoming Before Coming to Idaho.

Riley Rice, 78, a resident of Cottonwood since 1883, locating there when it was a hamlet and a stopping place for the Lewiston-Mount Idaho stages, and among the best known men of Camas prairie, passed away at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. C. P. Hinkle, 1406 G street, yesterday morning at 3:10 o'clock after an illness of eight months.

Stricken in November, Mr. Rice was cared for at his home until February and then brought here for treatment at St. Joseph's hospital. His condition apparently improved after two months and he was moved to the Hinkle home.

Raised Purebred Stock.

Born in Putnam county, Mo., Nov. 8, 1858, he left there at the age of 17 years and located in Nebraska, later moving to Wyoming, where he was a range rider for several years. After coming to Idaho he located on a ranch four miles east of Cottonwood and engaged in farming and stockraising, specializing in purebred cattle. He was a member of the school board at Cottonwood in early days and active in community affairs during the period of development on Camas prairie. He was a charter member of the I. O. O. F. lodge at Cottonwood, held office in the grand lodge of the order, and was active in its affairs until his last illness.

Wife and Children Survive.

Mr. Rice is survived by a wife, Catharine C. Rice, whom he married at Cottonwood in January, 1891; three sons, Arthur L. Rice, Los Angeles; Lester F. Rice, Sheridan, Mont., Euclid Rice, Spokane, and four grandchildren. Mrs. Rice is the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Elizabeth Code.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Brower-Wann chapel. Interment will be at Normal Hill cemetery. Oddfellows and Rebekahs are requested to attend the rites.
