Friday, April 9, 1937 C. J. Whitthorne, 48, Dead At Portland

World War Veteran Prominent in Business Circles Succumbs to Liver and Heart Ailments.

Clinton J. Whitthorne, 48, resident of Lewiston for 25 years and well known in business, fraternal and civic circles, and among the first to join Lewis-Clark post of the American Legion, died Wednesday night at the veterans' hospital at Portland after an illness of four months.

Born at columbia, Tenn., July 22, 1889, Mr. Whitthorne came to Lewiston in 1912 and for 15 years was employed by the White Bros. and Crum company in charge of shipments and in the management of the company's ranch at Alpowa. At the time of his death he was associated with the management of the Lewiston laundry.

He attended the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Wounded In Action

Mr. Whitthorne served overseas with the American expeditionary forces and was wounded in action. He served with distinction for the duration of the World was and was a member of the first contingent to leave Lewiston for training before being sent to France. He was assigned to the 91st division, infantry.

He was an active member of the American Legion and an affiliate of the Elks lodge of Lewiston, which he joined in 1917. Mr. Whitthorne was a brother of the late Mrs. Eugene A. Cox. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Inez Whitthorne, 703 Prospect avenue, and a brother, Samuel Whitthorne, Little Rock, Ark.

The body is at the Vassar-Rawls chapel, where funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. Calvin Barkow as officiant. Interment will be at the Normal Hill cemetery. The Elks lodge, and American Legion will assist in the service and military honors will be accorded the veteran.
